Calling all crafters--
Your country needs you!

My friends at Urban Folk Art Shows™ are launching a new national craft fair, and it kicks off this October in Portland, Oregon. U.F.A.™ asked me to make a short TV spot for their cause, and I've really taken their mission to heart. I've developed a commercial that will attempt to communicate everything that U.F.A.™ is about: Connecting artists accross the country as part of a larger crafting community; Strengthening an evolving next generation of artists and crafters (This isn't your grandmother's craft fair!); Supporting all things hand-made.

My Big Idea--
We're all in this together!

I want to make this TV commercial a truly collaborative endeavor. Using the slogan-- "Urban Folk Art Shows™: Hand-making Our Way Across the U.S.A." as inspiration, I'd like creatives like you (from all over the country) to construct an entirely hand-made map of the United States. Each artist will pick their state and make it using any medium of their choosing (drawing, painting, screen printing, collage, photography, knitting, quilting, papier-mache, mixed or experimental media totally encouraged)! Then we'll film the process and the results. I'll use movie magic to edit everything together, and voila! 100% hand-made. Entirely collaborative. A cooperative melding of the creative minds!

It's as easy as 1-2-3!

  1. Pick your State-- Just nab up the state you want before someone else does. Just send me an email with the subject line "craft-a-state entry" and tell me what kind of work you do (drawing, knitting, photography, jewelry, etc.). I've created a template for each state (continental U.S. only... sorry Alaska and Hawaii, I'll get you later!) with sizing specifications so that things come together nicely. Try to make your state fit tightly within these maximum dimensions, but don't panic. It doesn't have to be perfect!

  3. Get footage-- We want to see what you're doing, and it's going to really boost the awesome-factor of our ad if everyone gets included in this part. We need as many mediums represented as possible. That's kinda the point, you know? You can either schedule a time for our camera crew to visit your workspace and take some video footage of your process. Or, you can have a friend snap guerilla-style footage of your project in action. (Just make sure it's as clear/well-lit/hi-res as you can muster. And if things go horribly awry... don't worry. "We'll fix it in post.") Include in your email which filming option you can accomodate, and if in the worst case scenario neither is possible... don't freak out. You can still craft a state. We'll just "fix that in post" as well!
  4. Submit your work-- When you're done, just get your state to Pea Soup Studio headquarters* and the rest is in my hands! I'll need finished works by June 24th. (This deadline isn't set in stone, but we're in a time crunch people. So try hard!) If you're near the Kalamazoo area, we'll just arrange a pick-up. Unfortunately far away friends will need to mail their work to me A.S.A.P., but let me know what shipping costs you. Reimbursment of shipping costs is possible if you save your receipt (or better yet, tuck it in the box before you mail your stuff!)**

*You will recieve a return email confirming your state/medium selection. This email will also include address info for Pea Soup Studio as well as additional stuff you might need to know to complete your contribution by approximately June 24th.

** There is a small budget for production expenses, which I will be using solely to reimburse shipping costs for participants in craft-a-state. It's hard to estimate how far these funds will stretch. but I'll do my best to share the wealth.
